MARCH: The museum re-opened on March 2nd for the 2009 season. We had a total of 279 visitors from 37 states and eight foreign countries. We had 38 people from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Norway, Sweden and Russia. We were closed the 27th and 28th because of the Spring snowstorm.
March 4th, ten students from Pepperdine University visited with Delbert about the museum and the importance barbed wire played in ranching history. March 31, twelve young people representing National Civilian Community Care visited the museum. They work with Habitat for Humanities.
APRIL: The Super Barbed Wire Show in Shamrock April 16-18th was the highlight of the news this month. The Shamrock Community Center was full of tables of collectors showing their assortments of wires, related items and other collectibles. The Rotary Club served breakfast and lunch Friday and Saturday with free hamburgers on Friday night. When the collectors get together, it is like “Old Home Week.” Everyone has a good time catching up on the happenings of families and friends.
April was a good month with 457 visitors. Thirty-five states were represented. Of these 467 visitors, 122 were from 15 foreign countries. Those represented were: Australia, Canada, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Scotland Sweden, Switzerland, Wales and Virgin Islands.
We still get strange inquiries. One person wanted to know when barbed wire was first used in England. Surely someone over there knows. And then there was a person wanting to buy rope from us. I never know what awaits me when I open the e-mail every morning.
We ended April with a bus tour of 35 people from the United Kingdom on Thursday, April 30th
.MAY: Even though May was stormy we got some really good rain. We have more people coming through the museum since the weather is warmer. We had a total of 755 visitors, with 48 states being represented. We had 156 international visitors from 22 countries. Those countries were: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany;, Holland, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Netherlands, Scotland, Sweden, Spain, Switzerland, Greenland, Africa, Finland, China, Peru, India and Uruguay. A bus tour from Australia and New Zealand helped our attendance and sales.
We are always glad to have classes from our schools visit the museum. May 7th the fourth grade visited and on the 25th and 26th we had three more classes. Now that school is out for the summer, we look forward to having more families in.
